“Precious Lord”

Thomas A. Dorsey was known as “the father of black gospel music”.  He wrote the famous hymn, “Precious Lord”.  He tells the story of how he wrote it in the gospel music documentary, “Say Amen, Sombody”, and also on YouTube.  In 1932 Thomas left his pregnant wife Nettie in Chicago while he drove to St. Louis to sing at a large revival meeting.  As he looked back, he recalled that something was strongly telling him not to leave.  But he went anyway.  The next night he got word that his wife was dead, and subsequently, his new infant son had also died.  Devastated, a friend took him to a music school.  In the quietness, he felt a peace and said he felt as if he could reach out and touch God.  As he played the piano, the Lord gave him the melody and the words.  These are the words.  “Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand!  I am tired, I am weak, I am worn, through the storm, through the night lead me on to the light.  Take my hand, Precious Lord, lead me home.”
