My granddaughter could never understand how I would talk about athletes who would have children without the benefit of marriage, especially when they were Christian. However, many Christian athletes know that God gave them a gift to excel in their sport and a platform to proclaim the goodness of God. Nick Foles, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, is one of those athletes. He won Super Bowl LII earlier this year, yet he was on the verge of retirement two seasons earlier. In his book, “Believe It”, he shares the full story behind his unlikely path to Super Bowl glory and the faith that both grounded and guided him every step of the way. He said in his book that he found what he needed in the Psalms. “Re-reading the Psalms brought me a sense of peace and perspective in those days leading up to the Super Bowl. In David, I saw a man who had endured for more than I had. He was constantly in danger, yet he continued to place his trust in God. He was a great soldier and a skillful leader. He unified a nation and lifted it to great heights. Yet he was utterly human. He committed terrible sins, and he struggled with constant doubts and fears. But when placed in difficult circumstances, he showed extreme faith in God, and that gave him the courage and the strength to go on. My challenge was not against giants or jealous kings, but in my own way, I needed extreme faith too.”
